NMSU Foundation receives Nonprofit of the Year award from Chamber

The New Mexico State University Foundation was recently honored by the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce as its Nonprofit of the Year for 2016. The award was presented during the business organization’s annual Chamber Choice Awards & Gala last month.

Chamber of Commerce CEO and President Debbi Moore said the NMSU Foundation was selected for its outstanding contributions to the community.

“The Foundation serves a vital role in the education of our future workforce, business leaders and entrepreneurs,” Moore said. “We salute the Foundation for continually making a difference in our community with this special recognition.”

The NMSU Foundation is a nonprofit organization developed to secure, manage and invest private gifts for the benefit of NMSU’s teaching, research, extension education and public service programs.

“We are grateful for our Chamber of Commerce and their leadership in supporting our community’s growth,” said NMSU Foundation President Andrea Tawney. “Our Foundation follows the mission of providing educational opportunities for students from every corner of our state. It’s a partnership with our businesses, alumni and Aggie supporters to provide game-changers for families in New Mexico.”

This academic year, the Foundation awarded more than $3.6 million in scholarship funds to 3,263 students at all NMSU campuses throughout the state.

The NMSU Foundation has completed two Giving Tuesday fundraising events, which raised nearly $8 million from more than 3,000 donors for scholarships and programs across the NMSU system. In April, the Foundation will launch a comprehensive $125 million fundraising campaign, with a public kickoff event slated for 4 p.m. April 28 at the Associated Students of NMSU Center for the Arts, at the corner of University Avenue and Espina Street, featuring country music artist Bri Bagwell.

“This Nonprofit of the Year award really belongs to our entire community,” Tawney said. “The work that we do to support student success, faculty excellence and community outreach is only possible because of the generosity of our business community and donors here in Las Cruces and around the globe. We’re honored by this recognition, and we share it with our entire Aggie family.”
