Authorities Recover Body Of Drowning Victim In Pecos River

FT. SUMNER, N.M. (AP) — State police say the body of a New Mexico teenager has been recovered from the Pecos River.

Authorities say 19-year-old Colton Alexander Sawyer of Tularosa and two friends were jumping into the river near a dam west of Ft. Sumner on Friday evening, but Sawyer never resurfaced.

The New Mexico State Police Search and Recovery Dive Team along with local search and rescue personnel conducted searches along the river south of the dam. Volunteers from the community helped and the state police helicopter was dispatched.

The flow at the dam also was shut down to assist with the search.

Sawyer's body was found Sunday about a mile downstream from where he was last seen.

The body was turned over to the Office of the Medical Investigator. No other details were available.
